The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) plays a key role in the ongoing quality assurance and regulation of the maternity services and its staff. Effective and efficient regulatory bodies are vital for ensuring better, safer care for maternity service users, and AIMS - on behalf of all maternity service users - thus seeks to keep their activities under close review and push for improvements to the maternity-related regulatory system as necessary.
The NMC have consulted on the public and stakeholders' opinions on the strategic direction for the NMC for 2020-2025. AIMS has drawn on our knowledge about women’s experiences of using maternity services, our understanding of the vital role of the NMC, and our knowledge of women's experiences of interacting with the NMC, to respond to this current consultation.

AIMS supports all maternity service users to navigate the system as it exists, and campaigns for a system which truly meets the needs of all. AIMS does not give medical advice, but instead we focus on helping women to find the information that they need to make informed decisions about what is right for them, and support them to have their decisions respected by their health care providers. The AIMS Helpline volunteers will be happy to provide further information and support. Please email helpline@aims.org.uk or ring 0300 365 0663.
