Join us for the launch of Threads of Protest
A new exhibition at Science Gallery London exploring inequality in maternity care through creative practice, lived experience and academic research.
Through textile works and collective making, Threads of Protest brings together craft, research and personal testimony to explore important questions: How are human rights protected in childbirth? Whose voices are heard within healthcare systems? And how can creative practice become a means for solidarity and change?
The exhibition features crocheted works created collaboratively by artists and contributors, alongside personal stories and research emerging from Dr Gemma Mckenzie’s ESRC postdoctoral fellowship in the Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery and Palliative Care at King’s College London, which examines human rights in childbirth.
Building on the historic use of thread as a form of protest in women’s art, the exhibition uses crochet as a practical and accessible creative language to communicate experiences that are often unheard. Individual stories come together through collective making to form a shared call for improved human rights in maternity care.
The exhibition is part of a wider programme exploring healthcare, equality and social justice, including public events and discussions with researchers and students from King’s College London to mark the 300th anniversary year of Guy’s Hospital.
We hope you can join us to celebrate the opening of this powerful new exhibition.
